چکیده

We describe recent efforts to develop microfabricated atomic frequency references capable of supporting a wide variety of commercial and military systems such as global positioning and wireless communication. These devices are anticipated to eventually have a volume of 1 cm, dissipate less than 30 mW of electrical power and maintain a fractional frequency stability better than 10 over one hour. Because of the small size and low power requirements, these devices will enable atomic-level timekeeping in portable, battery-powered units.

Reliability characteristics of microfabricated Rb mini-lamps for optical pumping in miniature atomic clocks and magnetometers

With the rising need for microfabricated chip-scale atomic clocks to enable high precision timekeeping in portable applications, there has been active interest in developing miniature (<few cm), chip-scale alkali vapor lamps, since vapor plasma discharge sources are currently the standard for optical pumping in double-resonance clocks. We reported in 2012 a first microfabricated chip-scale Rubi...

Long-term Stability of Nist Chip-scale Atomic Clock Physics Packages

We present measurements regarding the long-term frequency stability of NIST chip-scale atomic clock (CSAC) physics packages. Changes of the clock frequency are caused mainly through time-dependent light shifts by the frequency-modulated VCSEL and properties of the vapor cell. We suggest advanced CPT interrogation schemes to relax the requirements on the temperature stability of the VCSEL as wel...

Testing local position invariance with four cesium-fountain primary frequency standards and four NIST hydrogen masers.

We report the most sensitive tests to date of the assumption of local position invariance (LPI) underlying general relativity, based on a 7 yr comparison of cesium and hydrogen atomic clocks (frequency standards). The latest results place an upper limit that is over 20 times smaller than the previous most sensitive tests; this is consistent with the null shift predicted by LPI. The result is ba...

Constellation Design of a Lunar Global Positioning System Using CubeSats and Chip-Scale Atomic Clocks

Accurate navigation on the moon, Mars, or any other astronomical body is essential to scientific investigation. The research presented in this paper covers the constellation design of a Lunar Global Positioning System (GPS) using the CubeSat platform. Since CubeSats have significantly smaller dimensions than most current satellites, their associated cost is much less to place into orbit. This c...
